The Difference Between Moisturisers, Night Creams, And Serums
It can be difficult to determine what skin care products you actually need to maintain your youthful glow, and the number of products available can be confusing. For many, not being able to choose correctly leads to a slap-dash approach – and our skin deserves so much better!
Here is an overview of the three main types of skin care products: serums, moisturisers and night creams.
Moisturisers (Day Creams)
Most moisturisers or day creams contain a very important ingredient: SPF protection. This helps you avoid sun damage and slows down the signs of aging. Day creams are lighter formulas designed to be worn under makeup. This light formula will help you avoid looking shiny as well as help avoid clogging pores throughout the day as you sweat. Last but not least, day creams contain less anti-aging ingredients as the most effective of these ingredients tend to be photo-sensitive.
Night creams do not contain SPF protection, of course. However they do contain the ingredients your skin needs to rejuvenate while you sleep. Night creams are heavier in order to deliver the anti-aging ingredients you need such as antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids, and retinoids. These ingredients will penetrate your skin throughout the night and help your skin recover and regenerate.
That leaves us with serums. Serums are like a high-concentration skin treatment that can be used to apply much needed ingredients to fight different skin challenges.
For example, a skin serum rich in hyaluronic acids will be helpful for those with wrinkles and fine lines whereas a serum with a high concentration of Vitamin C can be ideal for women with age spots and skin discolouration.
The difference between a serum and your day and night moisturisers is that they are designed for deep penetration into the skin to deliver a high concentration of ingredients. If you have skin challenges, from ageing and pigmentation issues, to breakouts and scarring, a serum can be used following your nightly cleansing, before you apply your night cream. It just takes a small amount each evening to start seeing results.
In fact, even if your main concern is to fight signs of ageing, a serum can be used by all skin types. A well-balanced vitamin formulation will offer everything you need to correct and repair damage.
Because of the key differences in ingredients it is important to use each of these skin care products to allow them to do their very different jobs.
