Why Drinking Water is More Important Than You Think

How much water have you had today? The body is comprised mostly of water (brain: 85%, blood: 80%, muscle: 70%) and many of its systems rely on a regular supply to function properly. We can go weeks without food, but only days without any water! Popular drinks such as alcohol, coffee, tea and soft drinks actually steal from the body’s supply of water, so although you may think that you’re replenishing your fluids, if it’s not the clear pure stuff itself then you may be being deceived! Read on below to find out more.

Improve Your Skin

The skin is an organ made up of cells, like any other part of the body. These cells are made up of water, and without sufficient water they will not function properly or at their best. Dry, tight and flaky skin are symptoms of a lack of hydration in your cells. When showing these effects your skin has less resilience and is more prone to lines and wrinkles.

Water is also an essential part of the delivering nutrients to the skin, and removing impurities and toxins from the body, which aids in the reduction of breakouts and acne.

Helps with Weight Loss

Dehydration can trigger false feelings of hunger, so although it sounds unlikely and strange, people can easily confuse thirst with hunger. Drinking adequate water will remove any “thirsty hunger” feelings and prevent you from overeating. If you’re craving a snack, have a glass of water first and wait 10 minutes to see if you’re still hungry or not.

An adequate supply of water is also required in the process of burning calories, to help the body metabolise and burn fat efficiently. Digestion is slowed by a lack of regular water intake and the decrease in fat metabolism can cause you to feel bloated and tired.

For General Health

So remember: soda doesn’t flow in our rivers, springs aren’t the source of alcohol, and it doesn’t rain coffee… the most natural drink is water, and what we fuel our bodies with affects our health and our lifestyle immensely. Replacing as many of your usual beverages as possible with water is likely to improve your health and your appearance. However…

Don’t overdo it

It is actually possible to drink too much water, particularly if you’re forcing yourself to drink regularly when you’re not thirsty. Everything in moderation!
