What is Environmental Skin Damage?
Time is not the only thing that determines how our skin appears -a lot of elements in the environment effect the way our skin looks including the sun, wind, pollution, heat, cold and smoke.
The sun and other environmental pollutants can cause damage to our skin as they produce free radicals, which causes skin inflammation by breaking down the collagen fibres which results in reduced skin elasticity. Environmental damage causes our skin to age prematurely as our healthy skin cells are being destroyed and age spots, fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear.
Environmental skin damage also results in our skin being dehydrated, dry, red and sensitised.
How CAN WE Protect Against Environmental Skin Damage?
By using products containing antioxidants, what are antioxidants? They are the knights in shining armour using their sword to fight against free radicals! But what are these antioxidants and how can we find them? Well that’s easy, just look for products that contain them – here are the top 5.
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide)
• Retinol (Vitamin A)
It doesn’t all come down to skin care either, we’ve all heard the saying “You are what you eat!”.
All fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants so eat up and make sure you eat all the different colours too. Have you seen the new carrots on the market perhaps the purple ones? Well the reason they are purple is the carrot creates the colour purple to protect its self from the sun and free radical damage, what happens to the purple when you eat the carrot? You absorb the purple “aka the antioxidant”
