Is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate Harming Your Skin?
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and the closely related Sodium Laureth Sulphate
have been heavily scrutinised over the past few years, mostly due to the concerns regarding whether or not these foaming agents are carcinogenic. Despite
the numerous posts online about how both products are cancer causing, many studies have proven otherwise. What both products may be having a negative
effect on, however, is your skin.
Is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate Behind Your Skin Problems?
The International Journal of Toxicology released a report in 2014 about the safety of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. The report found that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
had a degenerative effect on the membranes of skin cells because it is able to break down the proteins of the skin.
- Concentrations of 5.1% Sodium Lauryl Sulphate caused mild irritation to the skin in one study
- Concentrations of 0.5% to 10% of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate caused moderate irritation
- 1% and 5% concentrations of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate produced a “significant number” of comedones (i.e. blackheads) when applied
- Higher concentrations of 10% to 30% caused severe irritation and skin corrosion
Should You Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulphate?
The study concludes that the product is safe to be used in concentrations up to 1% and only if the product will be immediately rinsed from the skin. At
