Why hot showers are too much for your skin

While long hot showers may feel luxurious they do take a toll on the skin, washing away precious natural oils on the skins surface (in particular the outer layer known as the Stratem Corneum), which in turn leads to dry, itchy and reddened skin.

But it’s not all bad news for showers, you can still enjoy a relaxing shower, it just needs to be a little bit shorter and not so hot. Believe me, your skin will love and thank you for it.

Here’s a few simple tips on the best way to shower to protect your skins health:

  • Shorter, warm showers (lukewarm is best) are much more skin friendly. (The plus side to this is your water and electricity bills might not be as much!)
  • Never let the shower run directly on your face. This can contribute to broken capillaries. Splash the water on your face from your cupped hands or use a clean soft cloth. Micofibre cloths are ideal in this instance.
    • Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing it. And that rule of thumb can apply not only to your face but your body also.
