How To Avoid Dry Winter Skin

Anyone with dry or sensitive skin knows that when the weather starts to get cold skin dries out and rashes can get worse.  It can be difficult to keep the skin healthy during the colder months, so we thought we would put together some useful tips to help!

Bathing & Cleansing
Who doesn't love a hot shower or bath in the cold, but unfortunately frequent bathing or hot showers can strip your skin of natural oils. Avoid antibacterial soaps, perfumed soaps, and skin care products containing alcohol, Instead use warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap or moisturising body wash. Limit your showers or baths to no more than 5 minutes, towel dry, and moisturise while your skin is still damp.  For your face choose a gentle natural oil based cleanser that won't strip your skin and dry out your skin. Exfoliate twice a week to eliminate the build up of dead skin cells.

Diet
An essential element in keeping dry skin at bay is to keep the skin well hydrated.  Eat plenty of essential fatty acids particularly the omega-3's which can be found in avocado and oily fish, as well as the omega-6's from nuts, whole grains and flaxseed oil. A supplement such as fish oil or evening primrose oil will also help.

Avoid dehydrating the skin by drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day and reducing your intake of caffeine or alcoholic drinks.

Moisturise
Dry skin problems result when there is not enough water in the skin and the moisture is allowed to escape. For an effective dry skin remedy the simply use of an oil based moisturiser for dry skin will usually take care of most problems. Your normal moisturiser you have been using over the warmer months may not do the same job in the cold, so you may need to look into a richer moisturiser.

Swap your daily body lotion for an oil, which seems to have a better affinity with our skin, as it is closer in structure to naturally occurring sebum.
