How Sugar Is Ageing Your Skin
Do You Have A Question About Sugar Ageing Your Skin?

How Sugar Is Ageing Your Skin

Have you heard of the word glycation? Glycation is a naturally occurring process in which sugar “attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (or, appropriately, AGEs for short).” And basically the more sugar you eat the more AGE’s you create.

AGE’s are damaging for your skin's health, especially to collagen and elastin. By damage I mean collagen becomes dry and brittle which causes wrinkles and sagging thus expediting the ageing process.

Fortunately, you can take control over glycation by making a few lifestyle changes.

  • Reduce your sugar intake: This includes reducing consumption of processed foods and browned or caramelised foods. A diet which is more focused on whole and raw foods will help slow the glycation process.
  • Take on weight bearing exercises: With as much as 70% of blood glucose being consumed by our skeletal muscle, it is important for everyone to adopt weight bearing exercises to help decrease insulin resistance.
  • Drink water: Try to keep up with drinking the recommended 2 litres of water each day to keep skin replenished and hydrated.
  • Pamper your skin: This includes using sunscreen every day (yes, even in the dead of winter) and gently exfoliating your skin.

When the above steps are followed, a proper skincare regime with products focusing on reducing the affects of AGEs can also have a significant impact on your skin's health.
